Cathay Cargo Strengthens Hong Kong’s Role in Cold Chain Logistics

A major part of this strategy is the Air-Land Fresh Lane initiative, which allows imported cargo arriving in Hong Kong to move directly into Southern China under a single air waybill system. By streamlining customs documentation and reducing unnecessary cargo handling, Cathay Cargo aims to improve efficiency while maintaining strict temperature control throughout the transport process.

This matters because cold chain logistics depend heavily on consistency. Every additional transfer point increases the risk of delays, temperature fluctuations, and potential product damage, particularly for pharmaceutical and perishable shipments where timing is critical.

The timing of this expansion is strategic.

Global freight markets remain under pressure from disrupted air routes, rising operating costs, and tighter cargo capacity. Rather than shifting operations elsewhere, Cathay Cargo is investing in stronger infrastructure to reinforce Hong Kong’s role within Asia-Europe supply chains.

The Greater Bay Area further strengthens this strategy. As one of Asia’s fastest-growing economic regions, demand for healthcare products, biotechnology shipments, and high-value perishables continues to increase, making reliable cold chain infrastructure increasingly important.
